The pharmacy at UKER – an introduction to the team

We offer a wide range of services. As well as supplying and providing advice on medicines, we are classed as a manufacturer pursuant to Section 13 Medicinal Products Act (Arzneimittelgesetz, AMG). Research and participation in clinical studies are also part of our remit. In accordance with our mission, our patients are at the center of everything that we do.

Research and clinical studies

We offer comprehensive pharmaceutical assistance during drug testing projects. As we are officially authorized to manufacture investigational medicinal products pursuant to Section 13 AMG, we are able to provide effective support to physicians conducting clinical studies for testing innovative new bioactive agents for use in the medical sector.

We are also involved as a partner in numerous interprofessional research projects aimed at improving drug safety and raising awareness among patients at the same time as training patients in how to use medicinal products effectively.

Manufacturing and inspection

According to valid international GMP standards, we manufacture the following products on site:

Individual infusions, injections, drugs, and parenteral nutrition solutions tailored to the needs of individual patients in our Aseptic Preparation Center (AZZ)
Sterile and non-sterile drugs that are not available on the market, are too expensive, or have to be customized to suit the needs of individual patients.

We are guided at all times by our commitment to provide patients exclusively with drugs that meet the highest pharmaceutical quality standards. For this reason, we check all raw materials used in the manufacturing process as well as all the products we have manufactured and stored ourselves, and carry out spot checks on all ready-made drugs we purchase. In addition, our quality assurance department is responsible for monitoring hygiene and evaluating the results.

Expert advice for doctors on all aspects of drug therapy
Recording patients’ medical history, as we are the direct points of contact for patients when they are admitted to UKER
Clinical-pharmaceutical advice on the UKER wards, provided by our ward pharmacists
As the regional information office for medicinal products of the Bavarian state chamber of pharmacists (Bayerische Landesapothekenkammer) we support public pharmacies in Bavaria with complex pharmaceutical issues
Providing high-quality drugs and prescription-only medical products to inpatients and outpatients at UKER
Supplying pharmaceutical products to staff at UKER for their own personal use via our staff pharmacy

Pursuing a career in the UKER pharmacy

In our pharmacy, prospective pharmaceutical technical assistants can focus on producing drugs.

They can complete three months of their obligatory six month internship with us.
It is also possible to complete the clinical elective during the lesson-free period.

Our pharmacists

As a pharmacist, you work in our pharmacy and on the wards in Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. You are responsible for a wide range of tasks, ranging from organizing the operational running of our pharmacy, to advising our medical staff and talking directly to our patients.

Your area of responsibility

You are responsible for providing expert advice to our doctors and nursing staff on topics covering pharmacology, treatments and pharmaceutical economics.
You inform our patients about the medicines they have been prescribed and now to use them safely.
You check stocks of drugs on the UKER wards.
You are responsible for strategic and operative purchasing of our drugs.
You are responsible for the professional and structural organization of our pharmacy procedures for drug production.
You are responsible for checking the quality of the raw materials, our working spaces and the drugs we produce.
You support clinical studies with your pharmaceutical expertise.

Possibilities for development

You can complete a doctoral degree while working.
You can complete further training in the area of clinical pharmacy and drug information.
It is also possible to take courses in medication management in a hospital setting, in infectiology or in oncological pharmaceuticals.

Our pharmaceutical technical assistants (PTA)

As a PTA, you work in our pharmacy without direct patient contact and yet still with a highly patient-oriented focus. Our PTA’s are mainly responsible for working in the Aseptic Preparation Center (AZZ). You work in teams of two in the naturally lit clean rooms in the AZZ to produce crucial infusion solutions with the highest degree of care and in GMP quality.

Your area of responsibility

You are responsible for providing patients at UKER and our external partner clinics with drugs tailored specifically to their needs. Thanks to our rotating system, you have a varied place of work in our pharmacy, as you regularly rotate through each of the areas in the AZZ.

Other tasks for which our PTA’s are responsible include:

Producing non-sterile drugs and solutions for infusions and injections that are sterilized once they are poured into the final container.
Participating in clinical studies involving the production of drugs pursuant to Section 13 AMG
Checking the quality of the raw materials we use and the products we produce according to legal requirements.
Taxation and settling accounts for private prescriptions and those covered by health insurance companies
Providing advice to UKER staff in our staff pharmacy.

Possibilities for development

Depending on the focus in their place of work, our PTA’s can systematically pursue training in the areas of oncology, hygiene, clinical studies or quality management. You may also choose to take the certificate “PTA in a hospital setting (ADKA)”.

Our pharmaceutical commercial assistants (PKA)

As a PKA you work in our pharmacy in the department of pharmaceutical logistics or in the Aseptic Preparation Center. You are skilled at organizing a pharmacy and business operations and always keep track of our very comprehensive stock of drugs.

Your area of responsibility

Your responsibilities as a pharmaceutical commercial assistant in a hospital setting include commercial tasks, stock management and supporting pharmaceutical staff. You ensure that our patients are provided reliably with drugs, procure the correct medicine at the right time and manage merchandise.

Commercial tasks and merchandise management

You process orders, invoices and delivery notes.
You manage incoming goods.
You are responsible for checking and recording drugs and medicinal products.
You are also responsible for organizing the warehouse and managing stocks.

Your tasks in the Aseptic Preparation Center

You support pharmacy staff when producing drugs tailored to individual patients.
You are involved in deciding on requirements for drugs.

Your varied job also covers documentation tasks, invoicing and controlling.

Our PKA’s can pursue further training depending on the main focus of their work.

Drug manufacturing

Some of our staff specialize in the manufacturing of drugs. If you decide to work in this area you will be responsible for the following:

Setting up and dismantling devices, equipment and glass containers for manufacturing drugs.
Cleaning devices, equipment and glass containers for the sterile bottling of drugs
Bottling, portioning, labeling and packaging drugs
Stock management and waste disposal

Commissioning pharmaceuticals and accepting incoming goods

Some staff choose to specialize in commissioning pharmaceuticals and accepting incoming goods, assuming the following tasks:

Taking care of incoming goods and managing returns
Supervising the commissioning of infusion solutions
Managing warehouse stocks and disposing of waste
Operating a pedestrian stacker
