Medical emergencies are all part of a day’s work

Working as a nurse in one of our emergency rooms, you are responsible for the initial assessment and emergency care of all acutely injured people or anyone who suddenly takes ill. At our university hospital, emergency cases from all clinical disciplines are cared for around the clock all year round in our decentralized emergency rooms or on our labor ward.

We are currently establishing a central emergency room at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen that meets all G-BA criteria for level 3 - comprehensive emergency care. We are integrating the skills and experience from all specialist disciplines of relevance for emergencies.

Trained and experienced staff conduct the initial assessment of emergencies according to the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) within the first ten minutes of the patient arriving in the emergency room. Cases are prioritized and subsequent primary care determined on the basis of this initial assessment.

Facilities available at our hospital include trauma units, facilities for monitoring patients, and a central helipad on the roof of the building housing the wards of the Surgical Center.

When is the best time to start working in one of our emergency rooms?

In order to work in one of our emergency rooms you need to have qualified as a nursing specialist, a paramedic or as a medical assistant. We welcome any relevant work experience or further training, for example in emergency nursing care. We expect that you can work well under pressure and are able to work in our three-shift system. A knowledge of foreign languages would also be an advantage.

Your options for professional development on our intensive care wards

At UKER we place considerable emphasis on your qualifications and offer a professional development program with a wide range of courses for professional and personal development at our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions. In relation to our emergency rooms, we support you if you would like to undergo further specialist training, for example to work in our chest pain unit or stroke unit. You may also decide to complete further training in emergency nursing care (DKG) with one of our partners.

Taking on responsibility

You can choose to specialize in areas such as occupational safety, hygiene, ethics, the Medical Devices Act, or in the implementation of expert standards. We are always pleased if you gain further qualifications to become a nursing instructor and pass on your newly acquired knowledge to others. Or if you get involved in our subject-related working groups in which we explore ways of making our processes sustainable and fit for the future. If you would like to assume a more managerial role, you can look to become a shift coordinator, a ward manager or their deputy.

In addition to your tariff-based pay, we offer a dynamic university allowance of 143.92 euros*. Depending on your qualifications and the profile of the tasks you are responsible for, you may also be eligible for further allowances. Emergency room at the Department of Neurology for neurological and neurosurgical emergencies, head or eye injuries, with attached stroke unit

Central emergency room at the Surgical Center for emergencies from various surgical disciplines equipped with two trauma units for acute emergency care for very seriously injured patients, a plaster room, an operating theater for outpatients and an integrated outpatients clinic.
