Intensive care in cardiology and angiology

Our main focus

Our cardiovascular intensive care ward covers the entire scope of cardiovascular and internal diseases. We treat people with acute heart failure and people suffering from coronary disease. We also care for patients presenting with aortic or mitral regurgitation, decompensated heart failure or cardiogenic shock as well as patients with acute kidney failure. Furthermore, we conduct elective and minimally invasive surgery.

What to expect as a member of the nursing staff on our intensive care ward in the Department of Cardiology and Angiology

On our cardiovascular intensive care ward we offer you a varied area of work in an interdisciplinary and multi-cultural environment. Doctors and nursing staff work closely with colleagues from physiotherapy and all other professional groups, and we see ourselves as a collaborative treatment team with a flat hierarchy.

As well as an attractive place of work with pleasant rooms, our intensive care ward boasts highly modern technical equipment that is tailored to meet the needs of both our patients and our staff.

We have all the apparatus required to provide for cardiovascular and internal intensive care and monitoring. This includes continuous cardiac and rhythm monitoring as well as catheter-based support for the circulatory system and invasive and non-invasive ventilation therapies. We also treat patients with hypothermia after reanimation and conduct kidney replacement therapy.

In spite of using such high-tech equipment, our primary concern is to take the individual human needs of our patients into account. We care for our patients and their relatives with empathy. Quality-oriented, independent working is important for us. All colleagues have the opportunity to contribute to our ongoing development.

“A dream job? It certainly is! I left UKER for twelve months approximately 2 years ago because I had the feeling I had to go somewhere new. I soon realized that nowhere else appreciates the vaue of care as much as Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. Patients are treated with respect, and so are members of staff. Cardiology is at the heart of medicine, and it is definitely where my heart lies.”

Carolin Gumbmann, specialist nurse in intensive care/anesthesiology

“The mixture of getting down to business and providing expertise in stressful situations or emergencies on the one hand and taking time to care for other people during our everyday interactions on the ward on the other is what makes us special. I came to this ward directly after completing training and have been working here for many years now. I switched over to part-time after starting to study for my Master's degree. Although it is fairly far for me to travel to Erlangen, I see no reason for me to change to a hospital nearer to where I live.”

Lena Welsch, nurse

“The highly skilled team on the cardiovascular intensive care ward work together with a shared sense of empathy and humor. The good interdisciplinary team spirit and the friendly atmosphere among colleagues help me cope with stressful working days or emergency situations. I am stretched, but in a positive sense, and always have the chance to keep gaining more knowledge. I never felt left alone when I was just starting out. Experienced colleagues or doctors are always on hand with advice."

Julia Noppenberger, nurse
