In anesthesiology you are the first point of contact for people who are temporarily placed under sedation or rendered unconscious as part of their therapy or diagnostic process. You accompany patients with the highest degree of professionalism and care during all stages of this unusual physical state. You look after them using the latest medical technology and are there to take care of them when they open their eyes. You are responsible for the patients’ safety and wellbeing. If bodily functions have to be stabilized or reanimated in a serious emergency situation, you are on the spot to help straightaway, and acting with the highest degree of concentration you can assess the situation and recognize what has to be done.

The key to ensuring optimal treatment in our anesthesiology department is close, professional cooperation between physicians, nursing staff and all other staff involved, where time is taken to reflect on actions. We strive to achieve the best and least traumatic outcome for our patients in this borderline medical situation.

When is the best time to start working in anesthesiology?

To work in our anesthesiology department, you are required to have completed training as a nurse or as a technical anesthesiology assistant. That apart, it is especially important for us that you have the right personality for this challenging job. You are expected to be able to cope well under pressure in a job involving shifts or that requires you to be available on call, and to have good technical knowledge and excellent concentration and cognitive skills. Working in a team requires flexibility, a willingness to cooperate and good communication skills. We have standardized onboarding programs and regular practical simulation training for emergencies and reanimation to make sure you are always up to speed on the job.

Professional development opportunities in anesthesiology

We are happy to assist you if you decide to continue training to become a nursing specialist for intensive care and anesthesiology or a nursing specialist for pediatric intensive care and anesthesiology. At UKER we place considerable emphasis on your qualifications and offer a professional development program with a wide range of courses for professional and personal development at our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions.

Taking on responsibility

You can also specialize in the areas of hygiene, emergency training, the Medical Devices Act, or ethics or undergo training to become an instructor. That apart, you can assume more managerial responsibility by getting involved in shift coordination or as a group leader, a deputy ward manager or a ward manager or as the manager of a specialist department.

What can we offer you?

In addition to your tariff-based pay, we offer an operational allowance of 45 euros* and a dynamic university allowance of 143.92 euros*. Depending on your qualifications and the profile of the tasks you are responsible for, you may also be eligible for further allowances. As a member of our nursing staff, you also profit from these benefits, and working at Uniklinikum Erlangen naturally offers a number of other benefits besides.

Anesthesiology at UKER - potentially your new place of work

You will either be allocated flexibly to one of our 53 anesthesiology places across the operative, therapeutic and diagnostic departments or you will be responsible for looking after our patients in one of our five recovery rooms. As well as emergency care in the trauma unit incorporated into the emergency room at the Surgical Center, other possible places of work include the outpatient clinic for pain and anesthesiology at our Department of Anesthesiology.
