Nursing services intensive care wards - Karriere

Exceptional situations are part and parcel of your daily work

If bodily functions stop functioning temporarily or even go into failure due to a disease or an injury, temporary intensive care is required to support or compensate for them, even going so far as to assist breathing. In an emergency, patients have to be stabilized or even reanimated.

Coping with these life-threatening situations is part and parcel of your daily work on one of the total of eight intensive care wards at our hospital. You are responsible for implementing the intensive care measures determined for individual patients. You care for and observe our patients, administer medicine and monitor their vital data and breathing parameters that are transferred automatically to our electronic documentation system. You notice any changes and take appropriate action. You work closely with physicians and colleagues specializing in therapeutic professions or medical engineering. You also consult with our internal clinical social services and pastoral carers and look after relatives. During consultations with professionals from other backgrounds, your expertise is appreciated, listened to and acted upon.

With your medical expertise and your human touch, you make a major contribution to the recovery of our severely ill patients. You are by their sides right up until the time they are happy to leave our care and return to the outside world.

When is the best time to start working on one of our intensive care wards?

Whether straight after completing your exams, with several years of work experience under your belt, or after completing further specialist training: you’re always very welcome here! It is especially important for us that you have the right personality for this challenging job. Although you are expected to be able to cope well under pressure and have good technical knowledge, your social skills and empathy are just as important for us. We have standardized onboarding programs and regular training on topics relating to intensive care medicine, as well as regular practical simulation training for emergencies and reanimation to make sure you are always up to speed on the job.

Opportunities for professional development on our intensive care wards

The overriding majority of nursing staff on our intensive care wards have completed training as a nursing specialist for intensive care and anesthesiology or a nursing specialist for pediatric intensive care and anesthesiology. At UKER we place considerable emphasis on your qualifications and offer a professional development program with a wide range of courses for professional and personal development at our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions

Acquiring specialist skills

Working on one of our intensive care wards will allow you to gain extensive expertise in the conditions we treat. You have the opportunity to become involved in our nursing research projects and working groups. Our nursing concepts for intensive care involve

Basal simulation
Ventilation techniques
Support for the cardiovascular system
Probes and drainage procedures
Wound care
Renal replacement therapy
Concepts for positioning and providing patients with exercise such as kinesthetics or the Bobath concept

Taking on responsibility

You can also specialize in the areas of hygiene, emergency training, the Medical Devices Act, or ethics or assume more managerial responsibility by acting as an instructor or getting involved in shift coordination or as a group leader, a deputy ward manager or a ward manager or as the manager of a specialist department.

What can we offer you?

In addition to your tariff-based pay, we offer an intensive care allowance of 150 euros* and a dynamic university allowance of 143.92 euros*. Depending on your qualifications and the profile of the tasks you are responsible for, you may also be eligible for further allowances.
