At UKER, you have the opportunity to work in areas requiring highly specialized nursing care. The areas of work vary greatly. Uniklinikum stands for cutting-edge patient-oriented research with short distances from research to clinical application. Or maybe you are keen to pass on your knowledge in our training ward or work as a hygiene specialist in the area of infection prevention.

Current vacancies

Training ward

On our multidisciplinary training ward with its connected skills lab, we predominantly care for pain patients and patients recovering from thoracic surgery. The ward has a total of 16 beds. We focus particularly on training and instructing trainee nurses and doctors. As well as nursing expertise and experience, this job also requires teaching skills to allow you to pass on your knowledge of theory and practical instructions. We are happy to assist you and offer you the option of qualify as a nursing instructor at our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions.

Endoscopy unit

This large functional department fitted out with the latest cutting-edge technology is located within our Center for Internal Medicine. In close multidisciplinary collaboration, we conduct approximately 30 diagnostic and interventional endoscopies. Our emergency on-call service is responsible for all departments at Uniklinikum Erlangen. If you choose to work in this area, we would be pleased if you would like to pursue an additional qualification in endoscopy.

BMT unit

Our modern bone marrow transplant unit offers space for treating and caring for up to twelve patients. They are on our ward both before and after stem cell transplantation. We also provide intensive and specialized care to patients with severe cases of oncological diseases. We would be pleased if you are interested in this area of work and would like to pursue an additional qualification in oncology.

Radiation oncology treatment unit (brachytherapy)

Patients are prepared for the brachytherapy in the adjoined radiation oncology surgical department, then patients are brought to our unit for monitoring and care.

Transfusion medicine

As an operator, you work in the area of blood transfusions both in direct patient care and in the production of medicinal products based on blood products. These are essential for the recovery of a large number of patients.

Dialysis unit

From standard procedures for kidney replacement therapy to complex plasma treatment procedures, in our dialysis ward we cover the entire spectrum of the blood purification process both for in-patients and out-patients. At our 16 dialysis stations, we carry out approximately 10,000 treatments every year. As well as the dialysis unit for adult patients in our Center for Internal Medicine, we also operate the KfH dialysis center for children and adolescents in the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Up to eight children and adolescents can be treated here at one time. If you choose to work in this area, we would be pleased if you would like to pursue an additional qualification in nephrology.

Recovery room at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

You are responsible for the post-operative care of our patients in six beds with continuous cardiovascular monitoring (without ventilation). You check wounds after breast operations or extensive gynecological surgery and cesarean sections. Other tasks include pain treatment, prophylaxis and mobilization.

Nuclear medicine unit

Patients on our nuclear medicine treatment ward receive isotope treatments. For these procedures, our patients are isolated and you are responsible for monitoring them and providing them with care. If you choose to work in this area, we would be pleased if you would like to pursue an additional qualification in oncology.

Stroke unit

In our stroke unit, we provide complex and highly standardized care and treatment for patients with acute cerebral ischemia. This requires continuous cardiovascular monitoring and care from a multidisciplinary team. Care involves lysis therapy, heparin and neurological nursing concepts. If you choose to work in this area, we would be pleased if you would like to pursue an additional qualification in stroke care.

Hygiene specialist

The tasks of a hygiene specialist are very varied and require close collaboration with a wide range of different professions such as nursing staff, the medical service, cleaning staff, central kitchen staff and the maintenance team. The most important tasks include monitoring and advice concerning infection prophylaxis in clinical practice. You will be on hand to assist local teams in particular for matters concerning multi-resistant pathogens and during outbreaks.

Clinical hygiene also involves hospital hygiene inspections and hygiene ward rounds as well as monitoring disinfection and sterilization measures, and inspecting physical settings. As a hygiene specialist, you are responsible for setting down legal requirements, guidelines from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and specifications from the committee for hospital hygiene and infection prevention (KRINKO) in binding hygiene plans and hygiene guidelines. Finally, the wide range of tasks covered by hygiene specialists include monitoring construction measures and providing teaching and training. If you choose to work in this area, we would be pleased if you would like to pursue additional training to become a state-certified hygiene specialist.

When is the best time to start working in one of our specialist areas?

Whether straight after completing your exams or with several years of work experience under your belt: you’re always very welcome here! In addition to subject expertise, we expect our staff to have empathy, understanding and good communication skills. We have a standard onboarding concept in our wards during which we prepare you for your future tasks and introduce you to them step by step over a fixed time period. During the first few weeks, a mentor will show you the ropes and introduce you to our organization and how we work, giving you the confidence you need.

At UKER we place considerable emphasis on your qualifications and offer a professional development program with a wide range of courses for professional and personal development at our Academy for Health Care and Nursing Professions. Or you might find a new field of work at one of the many other areas within Uniklinikum Erlangen.

Taking on responsability

You can also choose to specialize in areas such as occupational safety, hygiene, ethics, the Medical Devices Act, prophylactic measures against bedsores, or in pain and wound management. We are always pleased if you gain further qualifications to become a nursing instructor and pass on your newly acquired knowledge to others. Or if you get involved in our subject-related working groups in which we explore ways of making our processes sustainable and fit for the future. If you would like to assume a more managerial role, you can look to become a shift coordinator, a ward manager or their deputy.
