Who we are:

The Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg has been rated as one of the most innovative universities in Europe by Reuters or Times Higher Education. The position of FAU as a center for immunological research in Germany is documented by the fact that it has consistently ranked among the top universities in attracting funding from the DFG in the medical research field of "Microbiology, Virology and Immunology". The FAU Profile Center Immunomedicine (FAU I-Med) unites more than 130 independent research groups from FAU, the UKER and the Max Planck Center for Physics and Medicine. The German Center for Immunotherapy (DZI), founded in 2018, reflects the translational orientation of immunological research at FAU and the UKER and will be further strengthened by a number of high-end research buildings that are currently built (Center for Immunotherapy, Biophysics and Digital Medicine, CITABLE; Center for Personalized Medicine and Research, CESAR). A high number of immunological research projects at FAU, such as the DFG-funded research consortia TRR 221, TRR 241, TRR 369, RTG 2504, RTG 2599 and RTG 2740, further testify the quality of the immunological and clinical research environment on the campus. Erlangen is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center WERA and executive member of the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research. The Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF) in Erlangen offers an intramural research-funding program for both established scientists (f/m/d) and junior researchers (f/m/d), as well as a clinician scientist program. The FAU Graduate Center supports young scientists (f/m/d) by providing advice on funding applications, family support, or professional coaching. Clinician scientists (f/m/d) are also promoted through the DFG-funded NOTICE program.
Within this strong immunological and translational environment, the Schober lab is situated at the Institute of Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene (Director: Prof. Christian Bogdan), which has a strong focus on infectious disease immunology, molecular microbiology and host-pathogen intercations. The long-standing research expertise in infections is complemented by the Department for Microbiological Diagnostics at the institute and the Center for Infectiology (certified by the German Society for Infectiology) at the University Hospital Erlangen.

You have the chance to do a PhD in one of the hottest research fields in biomedicine: Human T cell immunology. We have a PhD student position (f/m/d) available for talented and highly motivated students (f/m/d) with a Master of Science degree in immunology, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular medicine, bioinformatics or equivalent.

As a member of the Schober Lab (www.schoberlab.de), you will investigate human antigen-specific T cell responses, especially following flavivirus infection and vaccination. A specific focus will lie on the identification and characterization of T cell epitope specificities, as well as T cell receptor repertoire analysis. You will thereby apply state-of-the-art-methods such as multiparametric flow cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing, advanced molecular screens for epitope specificities, and transgenic T cell receptor re-expression via CRISPR/Cas9.
